Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
Someone is going to be seriously fucked for this

Wearing ear defenders is no excuse there should be touch lookouts when anyone is using power. There is conventional look out and someone watching him standing next to the fellas working and tap them on the back when the flag is raised and the horn blown so they can get off the track and into a place of safety

This is why railways are such a deadly place even if you don't have ear defenders on when you are standing on or near the track you cannot hear a train coming until its on top of you

I would have assumed that a safe system of work would have been set up for the site. Will be very interested to read the report once published.

Too much young blood out there mate. I noticed when we had to rectify the damage done by a derailment in a depot near Southampton

Here the intervention level in a depot is a derailment

A lot do raise their arm. But plenty don’t I can assure you. You end up having to blow the horn again until they do.
As said earlier raib report will be interesting

I watch a few cab rides on Youtube, very few line workers acknowledge the driver, I thought it was mandatory?

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
This was brought up in yet another training course on Friday that they did not have a site/ outer lookout

It was straight track so if the touch lookout did his job ,its bad practice not to have site lookout, the would have lived

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
These were Network Rail workers which were doesn't surprise me its the wild west out there with them. One regional manager cutting rail with a disc cutter no safety glasses or a mandatory hard hat. You would be removed from the project if you did that overseas and it is setting a bad example

In the this case they cut corners by not having a site/outer lookout just a touch lookout who lived

Completely different on the underground . I did some audits on there a few months back and its good to see the new generation taking safety seriously with no impact on production

The Underground complit

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
AOI it was confusing I agree I knew after I posted it

What I meant was it looked like straight track so the issue would either the outer looked didn't blow his horn and wave his flag or the touch looking wasn't looking at t at (Distracted) at the outer lookout

I think it was the latter because lived

I know what you mean Mike about this getting blown up, but this happened at work and you know as well as I do it shouldn't be happening their is the technology to eliminate Human error

Ear defenders while working on a train track. What could possibly go wrong? I have no idea how this happened.

Re: Killed rail worker Gareth Delbridge 'an absolutely fantastic guy'
Aged 10, we used to fuck about all the time on railway lines as a kid.

Just north of Farnborough main (hants), which is 4 tracks (2 outer slow and 2 fast inners is a bit where a smaller branch line runs underneath.

At the point of crossing and bang inbetween the 2 fast tracks is a manhole, where you can climb down lay on a girder on the bridge.

We used to wait until wr'd spot a fast train on the distance, get down the manhole and squeeze along the girder so we were directly beneath the fast track above...

The noise, vibration sparks etc was a right buzz.

I know it's of scant (or no) comfort to those involved, but the fact that such an incident (still) makes national headlines is an indication of how safe (we think) the railways really are.

You'd need a crash on the roads involving the death & dismemberment of a dozen kids and a convent of nuns to generate similar "newsworthiness".
